Nick Kyrgios' recent statement, where he put himself in the same league as Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in terms of public attention, has angered several tennis fans.
Kyrgios is recovering from a knee injury at the moment, and is expected to return to action at the BNP Paribas Open next month. He is yet to play a singles tour-level match this season; his last outing was at the 2022 Japan Open in October.
Recently appearing as a guest on Logan Paul's podcast called Impaulsive, Kyrgios remarked that apart from Nadal, Djokovic, and himself, no other player on the tour had much commercial value. The Aussie claimed that tickets were being sold and new fans were noticing tennis only because of him, Nadal and Djokovic.
“It’s always about me or, you know, Nadal or Djokovic or me. No one else. They are like, 'You can’t do this', but then they use my name to bring tickets, fans, and everything," Kyrgios said.
Fans were quick to unleash their wrath on the 27-year-old, calling him out for his apparent narcissism. Some even expressed shock at Kyrgios' audacity, especially since he has won only seven titles so far - with none of them being a big one.
"You’d think he was a 10x GS winner with that ego, not a guy who’s only won 7 singles titles and got away with domestic abuse O.K.," a fan tweeted.
"There's absolutely no stat to back up you bring more ticket sales. It's only in your head. You don't play half of the tour and if never make it too far & people are still watching tennis. Hollow head in his delusional era," another user wrote.
"No it’s really not, you deluded fool. I did not see one Nick Kyrgios poster when I went to the USO. There was plenty of Rafa, Thiem, Alcaraz, Medvedev, but no NK," another tweet read.

Nick Kyrgios denies being the 'bad boy' of tennis
During Logan Paul's podcast Impaulsive, Nick Kyrgios was also asked how he felt about being labeled the 'bad boy' of tennis. The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up responded that he had no clue why it was that way since he never did "anything crazy."
"I'm definitely not, I don't know, they just branded me this ever since I came on tour. Honestly, like, I don't do anything crazy," Kyrgios said.
Nick Kyrgios is often criticized for his on-court behavior. That includes using foul language, shouting at the chair umpire and even his own team, smashing racquets, and arguing with the spectators.
