Chris Evert believes Carlos Alcaraz is a generational talent who can produce a consistent level of tennis higher than even the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Alcaraz's skill and quality on the court even leaves Evert "in disbelief" quite often and the American tennis great feels the Spaniard has brought a new level to the sport, higher than ever before.
Alcaraz is the reigning US Open champion and the biggest challenger to Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal at the Grand Slam tournaments going forward. Evert urged the current World No. 1 to stay the course and not get carried away with the imagination and range of skills he possesses.
If he can do so, he will win multiple Grand Slam titles, 18-time Grand Slam singles champion Evert believes, as she is already convinced of just how good the 19-year-old Spaniard is.
"I'm in awe when I watch him (Carlos Alcaraz), I'm flabbergasted. I'm just in disbelief at how well he moves, and how he improvises and adapts to certain situations," Chris Evert told Eurosport.
"I think we're seeing a new level, a higher level of tennis. You always think you've seen the greatest with Roger and Rafa and Novak, but every decade, it just seems like there appears a player that is at an even higher level than the former champion. I think this is going to be one of those decades," the 68-year-old added.
Evert went on to stress that Alcaraz will force other big competitors to raise their game as well.
"I think he will bring the level up of Jannik Sinner, Taylor Fritz, Daniil Medvedev and the players that are going to be the new leaders in the men's game," the six-time US Open singles champion opined.
"Epitome of what an athlete should be" - Chris Evert on Carlos Alcaraz
Chris Evert further went on to call Carlos Alcaraz a 'born champion' in tennis and someone who epitomizes a professional athlete. She believes the Spaniard has the focus, hunger, and passion for tennis that are the most essential qualities for a champion.
"I want to say he (Alcaraz) is the epitome of what an athlete should be, with the qualities, and the tool-set," Evert expressed. "He was born to be a champion. He was born to be brilliant in the field of tennis, and he's got the tool-set as well as the championship intangible qualities like focus, hunger and passion."
Alcaraz will open his Miami Open campaign later this week and could face an in-form Andy Murray as early as the third round. The Spaniard is in the same quarter of the draw as Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, and Andrey Rublev, among others.
Alcaraz, who regained the World No. 1 ranking by winning the Indian Wells Masters, will need to win the Miami Open to hold on to the spot.
