Nick Kyrgios has made a public proposal to Roger Federer to fight a friendly duel in the tennis legend’s home country of Switzerland.
Nick Kyrgios recently shared a clip from his iconic 2017 Miami Open semifinal against Roger Federer and declared it to be his “favorite match.” In the high-quality battle of tiebreaks that lasted three hours and 11 minutes, the Swiss Maestro edged past the Aussie by a score of 7-6 (9), 6-7 (9), 7-5 (5).
On Friday, March 31, Kyrgios, who is currently out of action after undergoing a knee surgery, reshared the highlights from the tough Miami Open contest, this time challenging the recently retired Federer to an exhibition match in Switzerland.
“Exhibition in Switzerland? @rogerfederer shall we do it again?”
The duo were previously a part of charity exhibitions held in the lead up to the Australian Open. Nick Kyrgios and Roger Federer faced off seven times in official matches in their careers – with three of their encounters taking place at the Laver Cup.
In their first-ever clash at Masters 1000 in Madrid in 2015, the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up managed to stun the eight-time Wimbledon champion [6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (12)] - a match that resembled their 2017 Miami Open encounter.
The other six matches between the two were won by the Swiss Maestro.
"Roger Federer can make you feel really bad" – Nick Kyrgios on facing the Swiss legend
After his 2022 Wimbledon runner-up finish to Novak Djokovic, Nick Kyrgios was asked whether the Serb was the toughest opponent he had ever faced.
The Aussie, who has a positive record against Djokovic (2-1) and a 3-6 record against Rafael Nadal, stated that instead of the 22-time Grand Slam champions, it was Roger Federer who had proven to be the toughest challenge for him.
"I wouldn't say that. Like I said before, I had a chance to win the match. He doesn't make you feel as bad as Federer does at times," the former World No. 13 said. "I think Federer, out of the other three guys, can make you feel really bad, like he makes you want to leave the court. He can make things seem really quick and that the court's really small."
"Nadal and Djokovic, they allow you to play a little bit from the back and if you're not playing great, then you struggle," said the Aussie. "But Federer can really take it to you and get you off the court real quick."
