David Goffin defeated Roger Federer 2-6 6-3 6-4 at the O2 Arena in London to advance to the final of the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals. The 36-year-old Swiss, who appeared in the last four of the ATP Finals for a record 14th time, fell short against his Belgian opponent for the first time in his career.
Goffin saved four break points in the first game of the match before submitting to the fifth one. It was all Federer thereafter, as the World No. 2 went on to win the set 6-2.
The Belgian bounced back incredibly well in the second set to take a 3-0 lead. At 4-2, Federer had an opportunity to break the Belgian in the seventh game, but the World No. 8 managed to stave it off. He then fired a volley winner to take a 5-2 lead before claiming the set 6-3.
Goffin continued his impressive play and broke the 36-year-old Federer early in the deciding set. The Belgian served for the match at 5-4 and secured his place in the final of the tournament with a service winner.
Goffin had lost all his previous six matches against Federer and his first victory over the Swiss great fired him straight into the final of the season-ending tournament, where he'll square off against the winner of the second semi-final contest between Jack Sock and Grigor Dimitrov.
Meanwhile, in men's doubles, the duo of ?ukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo cruised past Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus to secure their place in the finals.
