Casper Ruud vs Jordan Thompson preview
After a first-round bye, seventh seed Casper Ruud will square off against Jordan Thompson in the second round of the Paris Masters 2024.
After a third-round exit from the Australian Open, Ruud advanced to back-to-back finals in Los Cabos and Acapulco and came up short in both. This was followed by a quarterfinal exit from the Indian Wells Masters and a fourth-round showing at the Miami Open. He was at his best during the clay swing.
Ruud was the runner-up at the Monte-Carlo Masters and then won the biggest title of his career at the Barcelona Open. He claimed his second title of the year at the Geneva Open. He missed making the final of the French Open this time and bowed out in the semifinals. He also reached the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics.
The Norwegian has struggled since his exit from the Olympics, with a fourth-round appearance at the US Open being his best result. Since his loss in New York, he has a 2-6 record. He recently lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round of last week's Swiss Indoors.
Thomson kicked off his run at the Paris Masters against Pedro Martinez. The former had the upper hand over the latter from start to finish. A single break of serve in each of the two sets sealed a 6-4, 6-4 victory in favor of the Australian.
Casper Ruud vs Jordan Thompson head-to-head
The two have split their previous six meetings evenly to tie the head-to-head at 3-3. Thompson won their most recent encounter at last month's Japan Open in straight sets.

Casper Ruud vs Jordan Thompson prediction
Ruud's form has taken a turn for the worse once the tour moved beyond the clay swing. Since the switch to hardcourts in August, he has notched up a 6-9 record, with half of those wins coming during the US Open. He has also won only one of his last seven matches.
Thompson has already beaten Ruud twice this year. He got the better of him for the first time in the Los Cabos final, and more recently when they met in the first round in Tokyo. The Norwegian registered his only win over his rival en route to the title in Barcelona.
Neither player has a noteworthy record at the Paris Masters. Ruud has won three matches from his five appearances here, while Thompson tallied his third career win at the venue by beating Martinez in his opener. The Australian seems to have figured out the Norwegian, and with the latter being amid a slump, he will be favored to beat him for the third time this year.
Pick: Jordan Thompson to win in straight sets.
