Sydney, Jan 7 (IANS) Top seed and defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland has been knocked out of the Apia International Sydney tennis tournament by American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
After falling behind 0-3 in the first set, Mattek-Sands settled into the contest and began to dominate the match with her superior power at the Sydney Olympic Park, claiming a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Radwanska.
It was Mattek-Sands’ fifth win after coming through the qualifying draw.
The 28-year-old American moves into a quarter-final clash against either fellow American Madison Keys or wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic of Croatia.
