Rafael Nadal makes winning return at Basel

Rafael Nadal plays a backhand return in his win over Simone Bolelli in Basel

Rafael Nadal made a winning comeback to the tennis court on Monday, when he beat Simone Bolelli 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the Swiss Indoors Basel. The World No.3 was diagnosed with appendicitis ahead of the Shanghai Masters and underwent tests in Barcelona after he was knocked out in the second round of that tournament by compatriot Feliciano Lopez. Nadal was knocked out in the quarter-finals of the China open by another qualifier Martin Klizan, earlier this month, which was his first competitive tournament since Wimbledon in June.

The Spaniard beat the qualifier Bolelli in just over an hour, smashing 3 aces and converting 71% of his service points.

The nine-time French Open champion admitted that he was happy with his performance and felt that he did not commit a lot of errors. “This was a very important victory for me. I played a good match, a solid one. I played with not many mistakes." the Mallorcan said.

This is only the third time the 28-year-old is taking part at the ATP World Tour 500 event in Basel. He last played there 10 years ago in 2004. He was beaten by Rainer Schuettler on that occasion in the first round.

“The important goal for me is to try my best in the next round and to enjoy every minute on court and the love of the fans. To enjoy tennis and enjoy the tournament." The 14-time Grand Slam winner said.

Nadal was showing signs of returning to his best, hitting winners throughout the match. Here is his best shot from his victory over the Italian qualifier.
