World No.10 and top seed in the tournament Rafael Nadal progressed through to the quarter-finals of the 2015 Hamburg Open, after beating Jiri Vesley of Czech Republic 6-4 7-6 in the second round on Thursday, reports ATP World Tour.
The 29-year-old Spaniard came into his own after breaking Vesely in the third game of the opening set and then saved a break point during the course of the set and then eventually sealed a break point to win the opening set 6-4.
The second set saw a similar tale unfold at the start, but it was Nadal, who once again, took the crucial lead in the fifth game, by breaking Vesely’s serve to go 3-2 up.A double fault on Nadal’s part on match point led to the game heading into a tie-break but after an 11-minute tussle, the 14-time Grand Slam champions progressed through to the final eight of the competition.
Speaking after the victory, the Spaniard said that he was happy with his performance and admitted he needed to bring more consistency into his game.
“I think I played a good match. Something that I am proud of today, very happy with, [is] my attitude and [I’m] very happy with the way that I played. I just need a little bit more consistency,” the 2008 Hamburg Open winner said.
He will take on Pablo Cuevas of Argentina in the quarters on Friday.
