Having become only the third teenager in the history of Masters 1000 tournaments to win a title in the tournament category at the 2005 Monte Carlo Masters, Nadal lifted further titles at Rome, Coupe Rogers, and Madrid later in the season.

The Madrid triumph was Nadal's 11th title of a career-best season which marked the best-ever ATP season by a teenager.

In 2006, a still teenaged Nadal successfully defended his title at the Monte Carlo Masters before doing likewise at Rome where he saved 2 match points against Federer in a pulsating 5-hour final in the Italian capital. In the process, the present World No. 2 lifted a record 6th Masters 1000 title and 16th career singles title before turning 20.
