Rafael Nadal, who just underwent a surgery to get his appendix removed will now have to undergo another surgery for his injured back. The Spaniard’s back problems began from the beginning of this year which could be seen at the final of the Australian Open where he lost to Stanislas Wawrinka.
Nadal is set to receive stem cell treatment on his ailing back in Barcelona next week. Angel Ruíz-Cotorro, who has worked as a doctor for Nadal for the past 14 years said that they were going to put cells in a joint of his spine. Nadal underwent a similar surgery on his knee last year.
The doctor went on to explain about how the surgery would help and cure Nadal. “When we have them we will put them in the point of pain,” he said, with the goal of “regenerating cartilage, in the midterm, and producing an anti-inflammatory effect,” Ruíz-Cotorro said.
If the surgery is successful, Nadal should be back in training by next month. Nadal won his 9th French Open title this year and three other titles. Injuries took a toll on him towards the end of the season which made him pull out of the U.S Open and also face untimely exits from other tournaments.
Nadal will look to come back strong next year, in his quest to catch Roger Federer as the leading Grand Slam leader. Nadal currently has14 Titles whereas Federer has 17.
