Bittersweet news for Roger Federer fans as Swiss announces he could skip French Open

Roger Federer and Mirka Vavrinec embrace after their wedding

Roger Federer is ready to drop out of any upcoming tournament, possibly even the French Open, in order to be there for his wife who is expecting a third child.

With the year’s second Grand Slam due to commence in a month’s time and his wife Mirka’s delivery reportedly expected to be around the same time, there’s a good chance the Swiss Maestro could sit the tournament out. He is determined to prioritise the maternal situation of his spouse over the competition.

“So we’re just waiting,” said the 32-year-old, who defeated Radek Stepanek 6-1, 6-2 in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters.

“It’s a priority for me trying to be there, trying to support my wife. I’ve played enough tennis matches. Missing a tournament or missing a match wouldn’t change anything for me,” he added.

The tennis icon, who has played in every Slam since the 2000 Australian Open for a record run of 57 consecutive Major appearances, went on to indicate the possibility of skipping Roland Garros which is scheduled to start on May 25 and end on June 8.

When asked about it, he said, “Yeah, let’s talk about it when it would happen. At the moment we hope it’s not going to be that way.”

“If it is, that’s what it is, you know.”

Federer is a father of two daughters with wife Mirka, who was also a former tennis player. Since retiring from the sport in 2002, she has been frequently spotted in the stands cheering for her husband. On December 24, the couple announced the news that a third child was due to be born into the family.
