The journey so far has been without any hiccups for Roger Federer and he would like to set the record straight when he plays his compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka on Sunday at the Court Phillipe Chatrier. The fourth round of the French Open marks the coming of some key clashes and one step further, we will be in the business end of the tournament. Federer has been uncharacteristically undermined as a challenger prior to the tournament and through the course of it. However, in the quiet manner that he has gone about his work at the clay court grand slam shows how dedicated he is to his Tennis. Federer is surely a contender for the title and it would be appropriate if the champion delivers in the most competitive of the French Open’s played in the recent past.
Federer’s play so far has been convincing even though he has had a fair share of luck with the draw. He has typically been good with his back hand cross court shots and has served well. Federer is smart in measuring up the game of his opponent and has great flexibility. As soon as he noticed his opponents losing out on drop shots or net-play, he showed no hesitation in going out of his way to employ those very elements. Roger Federer will have to be on top of his form now that his next competitor is likely to be either David Ferrer or Gael Monfils.
Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic passed his toughest test in form of Juan Martin Del Potro with flying colours. The Serb ended Del Potro’s resistance as he turned up on court on Saturday to continue their suspended match from day before. At that stage the match was poised at one set each however Djokovic set his foot down and clinched the match by 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Rafael Nadal as well as Andy Murray marched over their opponents into the 4rth round.
Stanislas Wawrinka will surely have the benefit of knowing Roger Federer from close quarters and thus he will be prepared for what Federer can dish out. However, being prepared is very different from being able to cope and overpower. Stanislas Wawrinka will want to show maximum resistance and stretch Federer into four-five sets. Federer on the other hand will be eager to get done with this contest as soon as possible so he can prepare and collect his energy resources for the likes of David Ferrer and Gael Monfils.
