Though Sania Mirza’s game has seen her rise in the doubles scenario, her dipping form in Singles continued as she failed to qualify for the WTA Rogers Cup following her defeat to Kathrin Woerle of Germany in a thrilling three-setter. After putting up a tough fight, the 11th seed Indian succumbed to a 7-6 (5), 5-7, 3-6 defeat.
In a match that lasted for two hours and 40 minutes, Sania clinched the first set after a tough battle but squandered her lead to eventually go down to the German. The second set also saw the two giving a tough fight though Kathrin manage to win. She came back stronger in the third set and restricted Sania to 3 games while she went on to clinch the match.
Prior to Sania’s failure to qualify for the Rogers Cup, she had lost in the first rounds of Citi Open and Mercury Insurance Open following her return from a three-week break. On the contrary she has been doing well in the doubles, where along with partner Yaroslav Shvedova of Kazakhstan, won the title.
Prior to her Citi Open triumph, with partner Elena, the duo had won Indian Wells and Charleston open before going down in the final of the French open. However the Indian now have just two tournaments left for her preparation for the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season.
