Former World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev will take on World No. 35 Botic van de Zandschulp in the second round of the 2023 ABN AMRO Open on Thursday.

Medvedev faced Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first round of the tournament. The World No. 11 had a slow start to the match and was broken three times in the first set. Neither of the pair were especially strong on holding their serve as the Spaniard failed to serve out the set at 5-3. He eventually won the first set 6-4.

Over the course of the match, the Russian had 16 break point opportunities while the Spaniard had 11. However, Medvedev improved his service stats in the second and third sets. He fought back to level the score at 5-5 but the Frenchman broke his serve in the 11th game to take the first set 7-5.

The Dutchman was trailing in the second set when he shifted his gears to break Halys' serve in consecutive games to clinch the second set. The third set played out in a strange manner as the pair kept exchanging breaks of serve to level the set at 4-4. They each held their serve in the subsequent four games to force the match into a tiebreak. Van de Zandschulp played some great tennis to gain a 5-0 lead in the tiebreak and eventually won the match 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(4).
