Aryna Sabalenka after winning the 2024 US Open

Aryna Siarhiejena Sabalenka was born in Belarus on May 5, 1998. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) has ranked her as No. 1 in the world in singles as of January 2025. Sabalenka is one of the most fierce strikers of the tennis ball on tour, often dismissing her opponents with her brute force. Sabalenka reached her third consecutive Australian Open final in 2025 by winning over Paula Badosa in the semifinal. She was stunned by Madison Keys in the final by winning the match by 3-6, 6-2, 5-7. She received a prize money of A$1.9 million for finishing runner-up.

In 2023, Sabalenka advanced to the semifinal at each of the four Grand Slam events. After Iga Świątek lost to Jelena Ostapenko at the 2023 US Open, Sabalenka also became the World No.1 in the WTA. Unfortunately, she failed to hold onto the ranking until the end of the year. Since then, she has won 18 WTA singles titles in her career including the 2024 Italian Open and the 2024 Cincinnati Open. She lost to Donna Vekic in the final of the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championships. Sabalenka reached the final of the 2024 Madrid Open where she lost to World No. 1 Iga Swiatek by 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 in the final. She lost to her again a fortnight later, in the final of the Rome Open.

Her prowess isn't confined to singles, as she also has six doubles titles till date, including the US Open in 2019 and the Australian Open in 2021. By winning the WTA 1000 titles in Indian Wells and Miami in 2019, she won the Sunshine Double, a distinction attained by just four women's doubles pairs.

The defending champion won a prize money of A$3,150,000 and became the ninth woman player on the WTA circuit in the Open Era to win successive titles at the Melbourne Major.

Coming to doubles, Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens reached the final of the 2019 US Open without having to play against another duo ranked in the top ten. In the final, they faced Victoria Azarenka and Ashleigh Barty, the eighth-seeded duo, whom they defeated in straight sets to win their first Grand Slam title. Sabalenka and Mertens then won the Australian Open doubles in 2021 with a score of 6–2, 6–3, against Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková. Sabalenka attained her first-ever world No.1 doubles ranking on February 22, 2021, owing to their victory in the Australian Open doubles.
