India’s Sania Mirza and Brazil’s Bruno Soares crashed out of Wimbledon 2015, after losing 3-6 7-6 9-7 to the pairing of Alexander Peya of Austria and Timea Babos of Hungary in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
In the first set, the Indo- Brazilian pair fired in a solitary ace as compared to their opponents’ 0 and also won 74% of their first service points, 7% more than the pairing of Peya and Babos. Critically, though, Mirza and Soares got most of the important points in their favour. They converted the lone break point opportunity that came their way, shot in four winners as compared to two from their opponents and also committed fewer unforced errors (1) than Peya and Babos’s 5.
The second set saw the pairing of Peya and Babos fight back brilliantly, as they got 69% oof their first serves in as compared to Mirza and Soares’s 65% and also converted one out of their four break point chances as compared to 1 out of 14 by that of the Indo-Brazilian pair. They also did marginally better in the number of points won (55) as compared to Mirza and Soares’s 54.
In the third and deciding set, Peya and Babos carried forward the momentum they had attained in the previous set, firing in four aces against two by their opponents and also winning 77% of their first serve points as compared to 72%. They came through the marathon set by holding their nerve, eventually knocking Mirza and Soares out of the competition.
