The Indo-Swiss pairing of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis continued their positive start to 2016, beating Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic in three sets 1-6 7-5 10-5 in the final of the Sydney International on Friday.
Despite serving more number of double faults( 5 to 1), the pair of Mirza and Hingis won more percentage of first service points and saved 4 out of the 8 break point opportunities during the match.
They also had better a better percentage of the first return points won and in the overall scheme of things, just edged out their opponents, by winning 58 points in the duration of the match as compared to 57 for Garcia and Mladenovic.
This is now the pair’s 30th consecutive win and during the course of this triumphant streak, they went past the previous highest consecutive winning streak of victories in a row in Women’s doubles, eclipsing the number set by Gigi Fernandez and Natasha Zvereva in 1994, who had 28 wins to their credit.
The duo already have one title to their credit this year, having won the Brisbane International last week.
This win should hopefully set the tone for the duo for the next two weeks when they will taking part in their maiden Australian Open and if they show the same kind of form that they did in 2015, then we can expect another trophy coming our way.
