Tennis star Sania Mirza opened her account in the AEGON Classic tennis tournament in Birmingham with a win against Taiwan’s Yung-Jan Chan in the first round on Monday. This was her first tournament after her high profile marriage with Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Malik.
Hardly putting a foot wrong, the Hyderabadi completely demolished her opponent in the first set and was leading 3-0 in the second when she started to make some mistakes. But she held nerve at 5-4 to take the set and the match 6-1, 6-4. She will now face 14th seed Thailand veteran Tamarin Tanasugarn in the second round, who defeated American Lilia Osterloh 6-2 6-2.
She hinted after the match that she might play for just two more years to give time to husband Shoaib Malik.
“The distance between us is difficult. But we will be together for life hopefully, so two years isn’t long,” she said.
She also added that her personal life was never a distraction, because they were two separate things. However, she would like to concentrate on her married life at the right time.
