Frances Tiafoe, meanwhile, began the season well with a victory over Adam Walton in Brisbane. He is set to take on Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard in the next round following the Frenchman's win over Nick Kyrgios.
Alexander Zverev began his season at the United Cup in Perth, defeating Brazil's Thiago Monteiro 6-4, 6-4 and China's Zhang Zhizhen 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 in singles. However, Zverev could not play for Germany in the quarterfinals against Kazakhstan due to a biceps strain. Germany, the defending champions, were ousted by the Kazakhs.
