The month of December is quite uneventful until the new season kicks into gear after Christmas. There were plenty of notable moments to occur this year. Jannik Sinner's ascension to the top and his dominance on the ATP Tour led to an all-time great season from him.
Novak Djokovic's quest for an Olympic gold finally came to fruition this year as well. The sport also bid goodbye to plenty of big names in 2024, including Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, and Angelique Kerber, among others.
Another action-packed season has left people wanting more. As fans eagerly await the dawn of the new season, here's speculating on what could possibly happen to shake up the tennis world in the month of December:
Serena Williams to probably consider a prospective career as a coach
Serena Williams retired following her run at the US Open 2022. She has been busy spending time with her family since then and gave birth to her second daughter as well. She has also kept herself occupied with her various business ventures.
However, Williams is never that far away from tennis. She made an appearance at the Paris Olympics and the US Open this year. While she accomplished everything that there is as a player, she could potentially turn her attention to coaching as well.
Andy Murray retired earlier this year and is now back in action as Novak Djokovic's coach, and could inspire the American to do the same. While most of Williams' peers have already retired, there are plenty of young stars who could use some words of wisdom from her. While a full-time coaching gig might not appeal to her at this point, working as a consultant would be something she could certainly think about.
Nick Kyrgios and Jannik Sinner to potentially call it a truce
Nick Kyrgios has been on Jannik Sinner's case ever since it came to light that the latter tested positive for a banned substance. Following Iga Swiatek's positive doping result, he has doubled down on his crusade against players who he believes aren't "clean".
However, Kyrgios has been away from the sport for a while due to an injury. He's gearing up for a comeback now, which could put him face-to-face with Sinner after talking smack about him in recent months. Despite his feelings towards the Italian, he could extend an olive branch as a professional courtesy.
While Sinner was given a clean chit by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), has launched an appeal into the matter, which could complicate things for him.
Nick Kyrgios to potentially delay his return to the tour
Nick Kyrgios' injury woes began in 2023, and he missed the start of the season in his native Australia. He made a brief return to the tour in June and lost in the opening round of the Boss Open in Stuttgart. He injured himself yet again and missed the remainder of the season.
Kyrgios was sidelined for all of the 2024 season as well. He's now preparing to return to the tour in December at the World Tennis League, an exhibition event in Abu Dhabi. He also has plans to compete at the Brisbane International to start the 2025 season, followed by the Australian Open.
However, getting into the groove after being away for so long isn't easy. After testing the waters at the exhibition tournament, Kyrgios could potentially further delay his return. While he's pretty excited to be back, he won't get an idea of how his body is going to hold up until he plays his first professional match.
Coco Gauff to potentially seek out another voice to add to her coaching team
Coco Gauff's coaching change towards the end of the season worked out pretty well for her. She parted ways with Brad Gilbert in September after she failed to defend her US Open crown, and hired Matt Daly as his replacement. She tasted immediate success with him and won the China Open and the WTA Finals.
However, players these days like to have a diversity of opinions when it comes to coaching these days. Hubert Hurkacz recently brought on board Ivan Lendl and Nicolas Massu as his coaches. Gauff could perhaps do the same, and maybe go to another well-known entity for some advice.
Rick Macci, who trained the Williams sisters, Andy Roddick, and many other players, perhaps could be one such person on Gauff's radar if she decides to go down this road.
