Serena Williams' first Grand Slam came at the age of 17 with a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over Martina Hingis in her 17th Grand Slam appearance. She went on win 22 more Grand Slams till date.
Serena was leading the second set 5-3 with two match points in her hand and got carried away. She then went on lose 13 of the next 15 points handing Hingis a lifeline in the match. Serena then managed to pull things back and won the set in the tie-breaker.
This was a huge upset in the tournament because, Martina Hingis was the no.1 seeded and 5 time Grand Slam Champion. It was also a huge moment for Serena Williams as she won her maiden Grand Slam in front of her home crowd.

Williams was losing the third set 3-5 to Azarenka and was just 2 points away from losing the match. She then went on to win the next 4 games and won the US Open.
