World No. 49 Alex Michelsen will take on World No. 96 Yuncaokete Bu in the first round of the Shanghai Masters.

Michelsen has been consistently on the verge of a breakthrough this year. He's chalked up 26 wins from 51 matches, including runner-up finishes in the Hall of Fame Open and the Winston-Salem Open. He also reached the third round of the Australian Open, where he lost to Alexander Zverev in four-sets.

The American will enter Shanghai on the back of a quarterfinal exit in Tokyo. He defeated the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Christopher O'Connell en route to the last eight but couldn't solve get past Tomas Machac. The Czech outfoxed Michelsen in one hour and 35 minutes, 7-6(2), 6-3.

Yunchaokete Bu, meanwhile, has played most of his tennis on the ATP Challenger circuit this week. He reached the semifinals of the Hangzhao Open, which was his best result on the main tour. Despite a valiant effort against Zhang Zhizheng, he lost in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-4.

The 22-year-old is currently competing in the China Open and is through to the semifinals. He outclassed the likes of Juncheng Shang and Lorenzo Musetti en route to the quarterfinals and then edged past Andrey Rublev. Bu defeated the Russian in a grueling encounter, 7-5, 6-4.

Bu, on the contrary, was rewarded with a semifinal run in Hangzhou for his hardwork on the ATP Challenger circuit. He also picked up the biggest win of his career by defeating Andrey Rublev this week. The Chinese is now two wins away from winning his first title on tour.
