Carlos Alcaraz vs Shang Juncheng preview
After a first-round bye, third seed Carlos Alcaraz will take on home favorite Shang Juncheng in the second round of the Shanghai Masters 2024.
Alcaraz started the season with a quarterfinal finish at the Australian Open, his best-ever result there. His trek through South America wasn't fruitful this time as he left the mini clay swing without a title. He returned to form with a successful title defense at the Indian Wells Masters.
However, injury woes plagued Alcaraz in the aftermath of his quarterfinal exit from the Miami Open. He missed a good chunk of the clay swing and only competed at the Madrid Open, where his title defense concluded in the quarterfinals. His participation in the French Open seemed dicey but he recovered in time and even won the title.
Alcaraz then defended his Wimbledon crown and reached the final of the Paris Olympics. His time in America was far from memorable as he lost in the second round of the Cincinnati Open and the US Open.
The Spaniard turned things around rather quickly. He remained unbeaten in singles at the Davis Cup and the Laver Cup, and carried that form to the China Open. He reached the final without dropping a set and then rallied from a set down to beat Jannik Sinner 6-7 (8), 6-4, 7-6 (3) and claim the title.
Shang drew Colemon Wong in the first round of the Shanghai Masters. The former's 4-1 lead in the opening set was cut down to size by the latter. However, the teenager bagged the next two games to take the set.
Wong was quick to mount his comeback as he started the second set with a break of serve, and built a 4-2 lead. That marked the end of the road for him as Shang bagged the next four games for a 6-4, 6-4 win.

Carlos Alcaraz vs Shang Juncheng prediction
Alcaraz has quickly moved on from his disappointing exit from the US Open. He has extended his unbeaten run to nine matches following his win over Sinner in the China Open final. He outplayed the World No. 1 with his trademark aggression and flair.
Shang won his maiden ATP title at the Chengdu Open, though he was given a quick reality check as he lost in the first round of the China Open a few days later. He didn't look that convincing against Wong in his opener here either.
Alcaraz was giving Shang a beatdown when they met in Melbourne earlier this year when the latter chose to retire. Given the Spaniard's current form, another easy win could be on the cards.
Pick: Carlos Alcaraz to win in straight sets.
