Daniil Medvedev vs Matteo Arnaldi preview
Fifth seed Daniil Medvedev will take on Matteo Arnaldi in the third round of the Shanghai Masters.
Medvedev will feel dissatisfied to have not won an individual title this year. After a runner-up finish in the Australian Open, he reached the finals in Indian Wells where he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. He also reached the semifinals of the Miami Open but couldn't make his mark against Jannik Sinner.
The Russian entered Shanghai on the back of a successful run in the Laver Cup and a semifinal appearance in the China Open. He started his campaign with an impressive performance against Thiago Seyboth Wild, winning 7-5, 7-5. Medvedev is making his fifth appearance in the Shanghai Masters this year.
Matteo Arnaldi, meanwhile, has had an encouraging season so far in 2024. He's garnered 28 wins from 50 matches, including a semifinal run in the Canadian Open. He also reached the fourth round of the French Open where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in four sets.
The Italian entered Shanghai on the back of a first-round exit in Tokyo. He started his campaign with a resilient comeback win against Zachary Svajda in the second round, 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-4. Arnaldi is making his second appearance in the Shanghai Masters this year.

Daniil Medvedev vs Matteo Arnaldi prediction
Daniil Medvedev is usually clinical during the final phase of the season. Despite his hard-fought losses in the Laver Cup, he turned things around with a last-four finish in Beijing this month. The Russian is close to securing his spot in the ATP Finals and will be eager to do the business in the Shanghai Masters.
Arnaldi, on the contrary, has stunned higher-ranked opponents such as Taylor Fritz, Andrey Rublev, and Ugo Humbert this season. He not only reached the fourth round in Paris but also made the last 16 in Miami and the quarterfinals in Barcelona.
A feisty encounter could be on the cards in the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena tomorrow. Neither player would want to exit the tournament at this stage, but considering their record at the highest level, Medvedev should see this one through and enter the fourth round.
Pick: Medvedev to win in three sets.
