All doubles quarterfinal matches will take place on Day 9 of the Shanghai Masters 2024. The tournament has been rocked by upsets right from the start. Four of the eight seeded teams were sent packing in the first round, including the second-seeded pair of Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic.
Three more seeded teams bit the dust in the second round, and eighth seeds Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek were among them as well. Defending champions Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos also went down at this stage.
With all the top guns already eliminated, this is a great opportunity for the remaining teams. As they aim to inch closer to the title, here's a look at the predictions for all quarterfinal duels set for Day 9 of the Shanghai Masters:
#1 - Wesley Koolhof/Nikola Metkic vs Nathaniel Lammons/Jackson Withrow
The American duo of Lammons and Withrow beat their rivals from Argentina, Francisco Cerundolo and Tomas Martin Etcheverry, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round. They rallied from a set down to beat the Belgian pairing of Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-5 in the second round.
Koolhof and Metkic sneaked past Arthur Fils and Ben Shelton 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 in their Shanghai Masters opener. They upset the fifth-seeded duo of Rohan Bopanna and Ivan Dodig 7-6 (5), 2-6, 14-12 to make the third round.
Lammons and Withrow have already gotten the better of Wesley and Koolhof twice this year. They first won in the final of the Libema Open, and more recently in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
The Americans' record at the Masters level is underwhelming compared to their accomplished rivals. However, they seem to have their opponents' number in this match-up, and have the potential to complete a hat-trick of wins against them.
Predicted winners: Jackson Withrow and Nathaniel Lammons
#2 - Andres Molteni/Maximo Gonzalez vs Simone Bolelli/Andrea Vavassori
Molteni and Gonzalez defeated Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski 7-6 (4), 4-6, 10-6 to begin their Shanghai Masters campaign. They were up against Karen Khachanov and Andrey Rublev in the second round and received a walkover from them to advance further.
Bolelli and Vavassori toughed out a 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 10-7 win over Tomas Machac and Zhang Zhizhen in their opener. They had an easier time in the second round and beat Wang Aoran and Zhou Yi 6-2, 6-4. Having won the China Open last week, they extended their winning streak to six matches.
The Italians and the Argentines have crossed paths twice this year, and each pair won a match. However, both of those encounters took place on clay. Bolelli and Vavassori are the only seeded pair left in the draw, and current unbeaten run makes them the favorites to win this clash.
Predicted winners: Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori
#3 - Santiago Gonzalez/Edouard Roger-Vasselin vs Ariel Behar/Robert Galloway
Gonzalez and Roger-Vasselin started their quest for the Shanghai Masters title with an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over Frances Tiafoe and Alexander Bublik. They staged a comeback to beat eighth seeds Krajicek and Ram 6-7 (2), 6-4, 10-7 in the second round.
Behar and Galloway ousted local favorites Sun Fajing and Te Rigele in straight sets in the first round. They faced the British duo of Julian Cash and Lloyd Glasspool in the second round, and secured a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over them, avenging their loss to them in the final of last week's Japan Open.
Gonzalez and Roger-Vasselin parted ways at the end of last season, though they joined forces once again halfway through this season. They won the Miami Open and the Paris Masters last year.
Behar and Galloway aren't as accomplished as their peers but their partnership has been off to a great start. They reached the semifinals in Hangzhou, and the final in Tokyo. They've got momentum on their side, and if they maintain their current form, then they could oust Roger-Vasselin and Gonzalez as well.
Predicted winners: Ariel Behar and Robert Galloway
#4 - Adam Pavlasek/Jean-Julien Rojer vs Jamie Murray/John Peers
Pavlasek and Rojer knocked out sixth seed Henri Patten and Harri Heliovaara in straight sets to get their Shanghai Masters campaign up and running. They survived a scare from Luciano Darderi and Alejandro Tabilo to beat them 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 in the second round.
Murray and Peers kicked off their run here with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over Adrian Mannarino and Ugo Humbert. They toppled top seeds and defending champions Granollers and Zeballos in the second round. They beat them 6-7 (6), 6-4, 10-6 to hand them their first loss prior to the semifinals at the Masters level this year.
Murray and Peers first teamed up over a decade ago and had a successful partnership for three years. They're now giving it another go, and so far have tasted a decent level of success.
Pavlasek and Rojer's partnership is relatively new as well. Peers is a former Shanghai Masters champion, and his experience with Murray as a pair could turn the tide in their favor in this contest.
Predicted winners: Jamie Murray and John Peers
