Reilly Opelka vs Arthur Rinderknech preview
Reilly Opelka will kick off his 2024 Shanghai Open campaign against Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round on October 2, which marks the start of the tournament.
Opelka heads into Shanghai with a 7-7 match record in singles competition this year. He was sidelined for the first part of the season due to hip and wrist surgeries, making his return to the tour in mid-July. In his first event back, he reached the semifinals in Newport, where he lost to fellow American Alex Michelsen.
Opelka's last win on tour came in Washington and has since been on a five-match losing streak. This includes a first-round loss at the US Open to Lorenzo Musetti and another loss to Ben Shelton at the Japan Open last week.. He did, however, win both his matches at the Davis Cup with the United States, leading them to the quarterfinals.
Rinderknech, on the other hand, enters Shanghai with a 17-18 match record. Most of his success during the first half of the season came on the Challenger circuit, with quarterfinal runs in Marseille and Lyon being his best results on the ATP tour.
He had a rather successful North American hardcourt swing, reaching the semifinals in Atlanta, the third round in Cincinnati, and the second round at the US Open where he went down to Andrey Rublev in a five-set thriller. Last week, he qualified for the China Open but was defeated by Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round.

Reilly Opelka vs Arthur Rinderknech prediction
Opelka has shown flashes of his previous form since his return, but consistency has been an issue. Despite brief moments of brilliance, he has struggled to sustain his level of play. His serve remains dominant, but if he hopes to challenge the top players, he will have to improve on his groundstrokes.
Rinderkneck, meanwhile, has impressed one and all with his exploits on the hardcourts since the end of Wimbledon. He's been a threat from the back of the court with his powerful groundstrokes, and equally effective at the net with his delicate touch. He has, however, lacked the punch in the decisive moments, which has cost him dearly. His unforced error count has also been a problem all season.
In what could be a very tight encounter between two big servers, it could ultimately boil to who takes to the offensive earlier and plays the crucial points better. Opelka could very well end up on the winning side if he can curtail his error count.
Pick: Opelka in three sets.
