Stan Wawrinka vs Flavio Cobolli preview
Three-time Major champion Stan Wawrinka will take on 28th seed Flavio Cobolli in the second round of the Shanghai Masters 2024.
Wawrinka was up against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round. Both players had break chances in each of the two sets, though neither capitalized on them. The Swiss pipped his younger challenger in the eventual tie-breaks to register a 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6) win.
Cobolli had six main draw wins to his name before this year and has compiled a 33-25 record this season. He reached his maiden career final at the Citi Open in July and lost to Sebastian Korda in three sets.
Cobolli also reached the third round of the Australian Open, the US Open, the Madrid Open, and the Cincinnati Open. He rose to a career-high ranking of No. 30 earlier this week.
The young Italian commenced his Asian swing at the China Open in Beijing. He advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Alexander Bublik and Pavel Kotov, before losing to Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. He received a bye into the second round of the Shanghai Masters as a seeded player.

Stan Wawrinka vs Flavio Cobolli prediction
Wawrinka's win over Mpetshi Perricard was his sixth of the season, and his first on hardcourts. He won 90 percent of his first serve points and struck 35 winners, of which 13 were aces, and hit 24 unforced errors.
After taking down one rising young player, Wawrinka will aim to do the same against Cobolli. However, the Italian has posted much better results than Mpetshi Perricard this year, so the veteran could find it tough to do so.
Cobolli has a 5-2 record against players ranked outside the top 100 this season, and hasn't lost to them on hardcourts. Wawrinka, currently ranked 236th, has struggled to get going this year. He's not able to consistently dictate the play from the back of the court, and his serve isn't that reliable either.
Of the 13 hardcourt tournaments Cobolli has participated in this year so far, he has won at least one match in 12 of them. He has been quite consistent in the early rounds at the very least, and will be backed to get the better of Wawrinka to make a winning debut at the Shanghai Masters.
Pick: Flavio Cobolli to win in straight sets.
