Stefanos Tsitsipas and Nick Kyrgios were among the high-profile casualties on Day 2 of the Australian Open. Both players were ousted in the first round of the Melbourne Major.

Day 1 of the tournament saw just one seeded player being eliminated but the next day saw six bite the dust in the first hurdle. These included Sebastian Baez and Alejandro Tabilo, both of whom, play their best tennis on clay and have struggled on hard courts on several occasions.

However, there were some who most people did not expect to go out this early. On that note, let us take a look at five shocking results from the second day of the Australian Open.

#1. Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Alex Michelsen

11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas did not have the best of starts in 2025, as he won just one out of two matches at the United Cup. This included a defeat to lowly-ranked Alexander Shevchenko.

Stefanos Tsitsipas was drawn with Alex Michelsen in the first round of the Australian Open, and the 20th seed started by winning the first set 7-5. The American won the second set 6-3 to take a massive two-set lead before Tsitsipas dominated the third set to win 6-2 and keep his hopes of winning the match alive.

However, Michelsen put the match to bed in the fourth set to register a 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win and eliminate the Greek in the opening round of the Australian Open for the first time since 2018.

#2. Nick Kyrgios vs Jacob Fearnley

Nick Kyrgios' first-round match at the Brisbane International was his first since June 2023 but the 29-year-old was still expected to beat World No. 92 Jacob Fearnley. However, the 23-year-old had other plans in mind.

Both players were very solid on their serve throughout the match, and two of the three sets went to tiebreaks. The first was won in this fashion before the Brit produced the only service break of the fixture in the second set. Fearnley won the third set via another tiebreak to salvage a 7-6(3), 6-3, 7-6(2) victory and reach the second round of the Australian Open for the very first time in his career.

This is the first time since 2019 that Kyrgios lost in the first round of the Melbourne Major.

#3. Jelena Ostapenko vs Belinda Bencic

Jelena Ostapenko did not have the best of starts to the 2025 season, as she won just one out of three matches ahead of the Australian Open. The Latvian was drawn against Belinda Bencic, who had returned to tennis not long back after giving birth to her daughter.

The fixture started with two service breaks before the Swiss broke and held to take the first set 6-3. The second set was tightly contested by both players and Ostapenko eventually saved five match points to bring in a tiebreak. Here, Bencic saved two set points before registering a 6-3, 7-6(5) win and reach the second round of the Australian Open.

#4. Victoria Azarenka vs Lucia Bronzetti

Two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka entered this year's edition after a third-round exit at the Brisbane International. Here, she was drawn against World No. 76 Lucia Bronzetti.

The Italian started in dominant fashion by taking the first set 6-2 before both players put up a fight in the second set. A tiebreak ensued and Bronzetti dominated it to register a 6-2, 7-6(2) victory, thus qualifying for the second round of the Australian Open for the second time.

For Azarenka, this was the fourth time when she faced elimination in the opening round of the Melbourne Major.

#5. Grigor Dimitrov vs Francesco Passaro

Dimitrov started the 2025 season by reaching the semifinals of the Brisbane International, where he retired due to an injury on his hip and groin region. The Bulgarian was seeded tenth at the Australian Open and given some of his performances in 2024, he was fancied to do well.

His first-round opponent was World No. 104 Francesco Passaro, and the Italian won a tightly-fought opening set 7-5. Passaro led 2-1 in the second set before Dimtrov retired due to another injury.

The Bulgarian thus faced his first defeat in the opening round of the Australian Open since 2013. It was also the first time since Wimbledon 2022 that he was eliminated in the first round of any Major.
