Stan Wawrinka has put all retirement speculations to bed in a recent conversation with a tennis insider. The 39-year-old was defeated 6-7(2), 5-7 by sixth seed Ben Shelton in the second round of the Swiss Indoors, Wawrinka's home tournament.

This has been a year full of retirements and their announcements, including those of Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Angelique Kerber and Dominic Thiem. There were speculations around 39-year-old Wawrinka retiring as well.

The three-time Grand Slam champion, who has enjoyed an illustrious career with 16 title wins, has struggled to return to the upper echelons of the tennis world for quite a while. He is 10-16 in 2024 and is currently sitting outside the Top 100 of the ATP rankings.

However, in a conversation with tennis insider Simon Graf, Stan Wawrinka, after his loss to Ben Shelton, has revealed that he has no plans on calling it quits. On the contrary, he is gearing up for the 2025 season.

Garf shared this news on X (formerly Twitter),

During his post-match interview, Ben Shelton had nothing but praise for the veteran and also joked about how Wawrinka had been on the tour longer than the 21-year-old had been alive.

The former World No. 3 did manage a scintillating run to the semifinals of the Stockholm Open and break Roger Federer's record as the oldest man to win a match at the Swiss Indoors. These performances from the Swiss legend will see him reentering the Top 150.

In a recent interview with SpilXperten after his win against Brandon Nakashima in Stockholm, Stan Wawrinka talked about how his passion for tennis served as the driving force.

"Tennis is a game, so you have to enjoy what you do and if you are passionate about what you do, you have to keep going and that's what I'm going to do," Wawrinka said.

The Swiss said that the motivation to continue must come from within and admitted that there were days when things got tough for him. However, his love for tennis helped him continue to pursue his passion.

"The motivation must come from within. If you have to force yourself to stay motivated, it means you are not passionate enough about what you are doing. It's not easy every day, but I love being a tennis player, so it's easy to push myself," he added.

In the same interview, Stan Wawrinka also said that he was willing to continue his career as long as he enjoyed being a professional.
