Kim Clijsters became the first mother to win a grand slam since Evonne Goolagong Cawley beat Chris Evert to win Wimbledon in 1980, when she defeated Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark 7-5 6-3 to win the 2009 US Open Women’s singles title. Clijsters who had previously been in a 27-month retirement, was given a wild card entry for the US Open.

After defeating Serena Williams in a controversial semi-final, she was up against ninth seed teenager Wozniacki in the final. The first set saw the momentum swinging from one side to the other. Clijsters broke Wozniacki’s serve early in the first set, racing into a 2-0 lead.It was time for the Dane to step up. Clijsters failed to hold her serve in the next game. Inspite of a strong wind swirling around the court, Wozniacki took the next 3 games to go into a 4-2 lead. Clijsters held serve in the next game surviving break points, and then broke the ninth seed to level scores at 4-4. Wozniacki, inspite of going down 40-0 in the next game somehow managed to break Clijsters’s serve. Now serving for the set, Wozniacki failed to hold onto her serve and the pendulum swung again, this time in Clijsters’s favour. She took the next two games leaving the Dane to serve, to stay in the match. Nerves started creeping in for the teenager, playing in her first grand slam final and eventually with a pump of her fists, Clijsters took the first set 7-5.

The second set started with both Clijsters and Wozniacki holding serve in the first four games. Eventually it was Clijsters who broke serve and after holding her serve in the next game, went into a 4-2 lead. Now it was time for Wozniacki to serve to stay in the final. At 5-2, Clijsters served for the title. As she approached match point, the crowd noise began to rise, eventually becoming a roar as Clijsters smashed a lob from Wozniacki to become the new US Open Champion.

Just in her 14 th match after coming out of retirement, here she was, lifting the US Open trophy. What made the moment sweeter, was 18 month old Jada witnessing her mother being crowned champion.
