Tennis couples aren’t a new phenomenon but they found more mentions in 2024 given World No. 1 Jannik Sinner joined in the conversation. The Italian has been dating top-20 star Anna Kalinskaya for months now.
With former top-10 stars in the form of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa also going strong, tennis couples really became a standout this year.
With the dust finally settled on the competition after the crowing of the WTA and ATP Finals champions, it is the perfect time to look back at some of these couples that dominated tennis news in the 2024 season:
#4 Stefanos Tsitsipas and Paula Badosa
Paula Badosa and Stefanos Tsitsipas did not have the best of seasons in 2024 but they still grabbed plenty of headlines. The duo got back together within weeks of the former having announced their break-up in May this year.
They were often spotted together, be it during practice sessions at joint ATP and WTA tournaments or during their time away from the tennis court.
Professionally, Tsitsipas’ season never quite managed to pick up after his clay exploits that saw him win the Monte Carlo Masters. The French Open quarterfinal was his last half-decent result as he faltered early on at other Grand Slams and did not make it to any Tour finals after April either.
Badosa, meanwhile, found her footing at the start of the US Open, winning her first title since coming back from injury at the Citi Open. She impressed with her results in Cincinnati and New York before registering back-to-back semifinals in the Asian swing. The Spaniard was rewarded with a return to the WTA top 20.
#3 Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac
Another tennis couple that made a lot of headlines in 2024 were Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac.
Having parted ways weeks before the Paris Olympics, the two went on to script a fairytale run at sport’s biggest stage. They beat big names en route to bagging the mixed doubles gold and then shared a celebratory kiss to top it all off.
While the two have been tight-lipped about their current relationship status, they conceded that things were also great between them professionally. Their Olympic medal is a testament to the same.
#2 Jannik Sinner and Anna Kalinskaya
Jannik Sinner and Anna Kalinskaya also grabbed a lot of eyeballs after announcing their relationship, given that the former was already on his way to the top of the men’s game.
The World No. 1 enjoyed a breakthrough season, clinching both of the season’s hardcourt Slams at the Australian and US Open. Kalinskaya, for her part, was there to support him more often than not.
The Kazakh posted some of the best results of her career in 2024 as well, marking her first WTA 1000 final in Dubai. That too with wins over the likes of Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff no less.
Videos of Sinner wishing Kalinskaya well for her match right after he finished his, often from different time zones, also won the couple many fans. While he ended the year at World No. 1, Kalinskaya at No. 14 was not too far from the top-10 either.
#1 Alex De Minaur and Katie Boulter
Winning big titles just hours apart would be the ultimate goal for any tennis couple. The fact that one of them would fly out to another continent to cheer for the other on the same night of having lifted their own title just makes the reward that extra bit sweet.
Having lifted the Mexican Open crown, Alex de Minaur flew from Acapulco in the middle of the night to land in Tijuana and traveled further to watch girlfriend Katie Boulter play at the San Diego final the next morning. Boulter held up her end of the bargain by winning a WTA 500 crown of her own.
The two have been dating for quite some time now, but 2024 was extra special as they spent a lot more time together. Even playing doubles together at Boulter’s home Slam.
It helped that both of them were at the peak of their careers. While Boulter’s two titles this season have seen her become the No. 1 Briton in the rankings and almost break into the top 20, De Minaur has cemented his place in the top 10. Not only did the Aussie make the quarterfinals at three Slams, but he also won two titles and debuted at the season-ending ATP Finals.
