Iga Swiatek and Chris Evert lauds Celine Dion for Paris Olympics opening ceremony performance

Chris Evert and Iga Swiatek were full of praise for Celine Dion's powerful performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

Dion performed Edith Piaf's iconic song "Hymne A L'Amour" on the top of the Eiffel Tower. This marked Dion's return to the stage after a two-year hiatus due to her diagnosis of stiff person syndrome, a rare disease affecting the nervous system, brain, and spinal cord.

Swiatek, who had to miss the opening ceremony because of her first-round match on July 27, watched it afterward and praised Dion's performance.

"Just watched the opening ceremony (I know, I'm always late with these things). Hopefully I'll stop crying before the next match. The Flame, last moments...I just can't. One of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. You have no idea how much you inspire @celinedion," Swiatek wrote.

Evert, meanwhile, referred to the legendary singer as a "hero."

"The real champion/ hero/ star of the @Olympics Opening Ceremony was @celinedion Breathtaking performance," Evert said.

Iga Swiatek kicked off her campaign for gold with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Irina-Camela Begu. The top-seeded Pole advanced to the second round where she will face either Argentina's Nadia Podoroska or France's Diane Parry.

Hugo Gaston couldn't contain his tears after a 7-5, 6-3 defeat to Matteo Berrettini in the final of the 2024 Generali Open in Kitzbuhel on July 27.
