Andy Roddick and Alexander Zverev blast chair umpire's controversial call in the latter's French Open title loss
Andy Roddick expressed his displeasure with the absence of replays in the 2024 French Open final, where Carlos Alcaraz defeated Alexander Zverev 6-3, 2-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 to clinch his third Grand Slam title.
Roddick posted on X that the chair umpire made a wrong decision by overruling a fault call on Alcaraz’s serve at 2-1, 15-40 in the final set, which cost Zverev a vital break opportunity. The former US Open champion demanded that player calls be verified and that replays be used permanently.
"Players normally right. Shotspot showed Zverev saw mark correct way ……. Cant replace real life playing reps when reading marks correctly. Good riddance to these umpires trying. Bring in the machines full time," Andy Roddick wrote on X.
Zverev spoke about the matter later in his press conference and called the incident "frustrating." The German also acknowledged that any official can make a "mistake."
"There's a difference whether you're down 3-1 in the fifth set or you're back to 2-2… that's the deciding difference. So yeah… it's frustrating in the end," the runner-up told the reporters.
"But it is what it is, umpires make mistakes, they're also human and that’s okay. But of course, in a situation like that, you wish there wouldn't be mistakes," the German added.
Alexander Zverev will kick off his grass-court season at the BOSS Open in Stuttgart. The top-seeded German received a bye into the second round where he will face either Christopher Eubanks or Brandon Nakashima on June 12.
Emma Raducanu teams up with former coach for the upcoming grass-court season
Emma Raducanu reconnected with her former coach Jane O'Donoghue ahead of the Rothesay Open, as her primary coach Nick Cavaday has been unwell.
Raducanu shared a picture from her practice session on Instagram as she geared up for her grass-court season in Nottingham.
Emma Raducanu is unseeded at the WTA 250 tournament, where she will face Ena Shibahara in the first round on June 11.
French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz shines in Roland-Garros trophy photoshoot
Carlos Alcaraz looked stylish at the 2024 French Open champion's official photoshoot, where he can be seen all smiles posing with his first Roland-Garros trophy at Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The Spaniard wore a black suit and trousers paired with a white shirt, black formal shoes, and a yellow-gold Rolex Daytona watch for the special occasion.
Chris Evert shocked by Caitlin Clark's exclusion from the US Olympic team for Paris

The roster for Paris 2024 includes players like A'ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Sabrina Ionescu, Brittney Griner, Jackie Young, Chelsea Gray, Breanna Stewart, Napheesa Collier, Diana Taurasi, Kahleah Copper, Jewell Loyd, and Alyssa Thomas, but Clark's absence surprised many, including Evert, who expressed her thoughts on social media.
