Tennis journalist questions Coco Gauff's mentality after Cincinnati Open 2R exit

Tennis journalist Jon Wertheim raised doubts about Coco Gauff's mentality following her second-round exit at the 2024 Cincinnati Open, where she was defeated 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 by World No. 34 Yulia Putintseva.

Wertheim voiced concerns about Gauff’s mental approach and proposed that the American player might benefit from a reset before defending her title at the 2024 US Open.

"Not sure if it’s her game or just sort of mental approach. We didn’t see her best at Wimbledon, we didn’t see her best at the Olympics, which I know is a disappointment, we didn’t see it in Canada, we didn’t see it today," Wertheim said. (via Tennis Channel).
"I think you say to her, ‘Listen, you’re not defending a US Open title, those points are gone, you’re trying to create, you’re trying to start something, you’re trying to start building’. Last year she had so much momentum going into New York… very little now," he added.

Nick Kyrgios discusses his journey to overcome mental health struggles

Nick Kyrgios revealed his personal battles with self-harm and thoughts of suicide, and how he managed to overcome them. Kyrgios, who has been sidelined with a wrist injury since June 2023, reflected on the early stages of his career and how his struggles led to valuable life lessons.

"I used to struggle a lot, early parts of my career, 2019, obviously self-harming and went through that stage when I was suicidal. I feel like I was able to learn so much through that and make it out of it and still play at absolute top level," Nick Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios admitted he wasn’t perfect like Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, or Novak Djokovic and needed external help.

"Everyone goes through these problems, they have issues they need help with and I was one of those people, so you have to take care of yourself... I am not perfect and you look at some other tennis players, they were pictured to be gods, super-playing kind of perfect," Kyrgios said.

Nick Kyrgios is next scheduled to partner with Naomi Osaka in a mixed doubles exhibition match called 'Mixed Madness' during the US Open Fan Week.
