After Courier, the Sunshine Double was completed in the very next year, this time by 1989 French Open champion Michael Chang. At Indian Wells, Chang was the 12th seed and did not win a match in straight sets until the quarter-finals where he defeated Russian Andrei Cherkasov.

Chang thrashed Spaniard Francisco Clavet 6-0, 6-1 in the semi-finals before beating another Russian Andrei Chesnokov (whom he had beaten in the semis of the 1989 French Open) in the final in straight sets.

The American was the sixth seed at Miami and defeated Pete Sampras and defending champion cum top seed Jim Courier in the semi-finals in straight sets to reach the final where he beat 20th-seeded Argentine Alberto Mancini 7-5, 7-5 to complete the Sunshine Double.
