Naomi Osaka's boyfriend Cordae discusses flaws of first-week album sales figures in the streaming age

Naomi Osaka's boyfriend Cordae voiced his frustration over the emphasis placed on first-week album sales, arguing that it no longer provides an accurate picture in today’s streaming-focused music industry.

The American rapper, who will release his third album, The Crossroads, on November 15, shared his thoughts in an Instagram story.

In his lengthy message, Cordae explained that focusing on first-week sales is outdated, particularly now, as it’s harder to measure true listener reach compared to the 90s and 2000s when album sales were the main metric.

"Want to say this now I don't give a f**k about a first week sales It’s a very inaccurate way to calculate impact, especially with the current streaming metrics. I seen somebody do 11K first week and then do a ARENA TOUR off the same album. Niggas said my last project first week numbers wasn't good and I ended up doing a sold out headline tour..," Cordae said.
"In the 90/2000s music was consumed by people actually going to the stores and buying albums. When you did 100k first week that meant 100 thousand people went and bought the cd. Now you can have 300,000 people listening to your album on streaming, and the units of sales Equivalent is 200," he added.
