1) First ATP title – defeating Wawrinka!
After all the good performances that saw a meteoric rise in Zverev’s career, an ATP title was all that was missing. That changed on 25th September when he took on Stan Wawrinka in the final of the St. Petersburg Open.
The US Open champion would not have taken the German lightly because he had claimed the scalp of top-10 player Tomas Berdych in the semifinal.
Even then, the Swiss was not prepared for Zverev’s big serves and confident game play. The 6-2 3-6 7-5 upset, in which the German had to withstand a late charge from Wawrinka, underlined his standing as a genuinely exciting prospect in men’s tennis.
To put the win into perspective, Zverev became the first man to beat Wawrinka in a tour final since 2013. He is also now the youngest ATP titlist since 2008. He said after the monumental result – “This victory is something special. I played all the finals well. I lost to Dominic Thiem on clay and I could have won against Florian Mayer on the grass... Now I'm very happy with the win, especially over such a great player like Stan.”
Indeed it was special and if the evidence is anything to go by, this title is only the first of many, many more for Alexander Zverev.
