I must admit I have little or no interest in Womens tennis. For it lacks the intensity and all round quality of the Mens game. Also in truth it lacks the depth and whereas I used to pay it respect by watching it.These blatant grunting cheats to me has made the game unbearable.Though in 2003 in the Semi Finals at the French Open. I must admit I saw one of the best Tennis matches I have ever witnessed between Serena Williams and Justine Henin. In truth this was a female version of David versus Goliah. For you had the petite, dainty, classical player in Henin and the brute power od Serena Williams. In the lead up to the game everyone just thought that Williams would win with a minimum of fuss. For how can little Justine pierce and disrail Serena’s peerless power game coupled with her great court coverage in those days? When she was a determined Tennis player who truly dominated, before fashion designer,tv host and everything else shes into now.The script was going to plan too as the first two sets were split, but in the 3rd Serena skipped out to a 4/2 lead and everyone thought that Henin would just disappear without a trace.Though this is where this rivalry started and got real heated in one single point.Williams is serving 30 love up to lead by 5/2 and almost certain victory.Though serves when everyone in the stadium and the television audience saw Henin’s hand go up to wait.Though the Umpire doesn’t see this and Serena serves a fault, asks for a replay on the 1st serve on the basis of Henin’s signal.Though the Umpire doesn’t intervene and Henin doesn’t own up sighting its the job of the Umpire. Thus Serena goes into mental meltdown by losing the next 4 points to Henin and gifts back the break….
After the game Williams accuses Henin of cheating,Henin is ambivalent and focuses on the greatness of the match. Thus the look across the net from Williams at Henin was akin to Joe Fraser eyeballing Mohammud Ali.It was intense and the Crowd felt it whistling and jeering Williams at every chance.Henin just acted as though butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth as William imploded before everyone’s eyes.Duly Henin focussed on the tennis and Williams couldn’t escape that moment and Henin wont the third 7/5Even after the match the coldness between the too was very striking with Williams basically running past Henin with a cursory handshake. To slump in her chair and vent in a flood of sobs and tears. It was compelling theatre rarely seen on a tennis court with women involved.
Duly Henin went on to claim the French Open Title and the greatest Rivalry in the Modern Womens game had begun!
