Daria Kasatkina vs Sofia Kenin preview
Third seed Daria Kasatkina will lock horns with former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in the quarterfinals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2024.
After a first-round bye, Kasatkina took on McCartney Kessler in the second round here. The Russian went down a break to trail 4-1 in the opening set. Her joy of getting back on serve was short-lived as she got broken again to fall behind 5-3, and her opponent closed out the set after that to take a one-set lead.
The second set played out in the exact same manner, though the final outcome was in Kasatkina's favor. She went 4-1 up, only for Kessler to get back on serve. She then snagged another break to lead 5-3 and served out the set in the next game to level the match. The Russian ran away with the contest in the decider and dropped only one game in it for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 win.
Kenin began her run in Tokyo with a comfortable 6-1, 6-4 win over Wang Xinyu and was up against Clara Tauson in the second round. Both remained quite steady on serve in the first set, which led to a tie-break. Each of them had a set point in it, and the American's failure to close it out cost her as her opponent pounced on her chances.
The two went toe-to-toe in the second set as well, until a break in the 10th game of the set sealed it in Kenin's favor. She went down a break in the third set to trail 5-4 and stopped Tauson from serving out the match in the following game. The set went to a tie-break, in which the American came out on top for a 6-7 (8), 6-4, 7-6 (6) win.

Daria Kasatkina vs Sofia Kenin prediction
Both players staged a comeback to win in the previous round, and it was a herculean effort on Kenin's part to get over the finish line. It marked the first time that she won back-to-back matches on hardcourts this year. She also improved her record to 10-23 this season.
Winning this match is equally important for both. Kenin would be on the cusp of returning to the top 100, and Kasatkina would be one step closer to becoming the first alternate at the WTA Finals.
Kenin has one win over a top-10 player this year, while Kasatkina has a 7-2 record against players outside the top 100. However, her two losses were against Amanda Anisimova and Naomi Osaka, so that is excusable. The Russian has won her last two matches against the American, and given how they've performed this year, she has a good shot at completing a hat-trick of wins.
