At the last Grand Slam of the year in New York, Zverev squandered a two-set lead against Moldovan Radu Albot in the first round before winning 6-1 6-3 3-6 4-6 6-2. In the next round. it was American Frances Tiafoe's turn to take two sets off the young German, but like four other players earlier in the season, he couldn't force a win as Zverev prevailed 6-3 3-6 6-2 2-6 6-3.
With the win over Tiafoe, Zverev emulated Nishikori to become the only other player to win five five-set Grand Slam matches in the season, as the young German improved his career five-set record to 13-6 (0.69).
