#1 vs. Serena Williams at the semi-finals of the 2016 US Open
After clinching the Cincinnati Masters, Pliskova’s ranking shot up to 11 and she was seeded 10th at the US Open. The Czech began her tournament with a straight sets victory over local wildcard Sofia Kenin following which she defeated Paraguayan qualifier Montserrat Gonzalez in the second round.
Pliskova defeated 17th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. In the fourth round, Pliskova came from a set down to defeat two-time champion and 6th seed Venus Williams, thus reaching her first ever Grand Slam quarter-final.
At the quarter-finals, Pliskova defeated Croat Ana Konjuh to set up a semi-final against top seed and tournament favourite Serena Williams. Pliskova breezed past Williams 6-2 in the first set. The top seed put up a tough fight in the second set but the 10th seeded Czech held her nerve and edged out the American 7-5 to reach her maiden Grand Slam final. Pliskova’s win meant that Angelique Kerber would become the WTA No. 1 following the completion of the tournament.
Pliskova went on to lose the final to Kerber in three sets despite winning the second set and being a break up in the final set.
