Top seed Vishnu Vardhan moves into second round

Top seeded Vishnu Vardhan was one of eight Indian men who booked a place in the second round of the ITF Men’s Future US$10,000 Tennis Tournament in Chandigarh on Monday.

Vardhan scored a 6-4, 7-6 win over unlucky Viven Shokeen, one of the nine Indians who lost their opening match. The top seed will now take on compatriot Sanam Singh who beat wild card Juan Antonio Los Santos 6-3, 6-1.

Third seeded Rohan Gajjar was the biggest casualty in the first round, losing 7-6, 6-4 to fellow Indian Rupesh Roy.

Other Indians to move into the last 16 included fifth seed Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan, 8th seed Saketh Myneni, Siddharth Rawat, Vignesh Peranamallur and Sriram Balaji.

Besides Vardhan versus Singh, there will be two more all Indian clashes – Siddharth Rawat will take on Saketh Myneni and Sriram Balaji will meet Rupesh Roy – assuring at least 3 quarter final berths for the Indians.

The Futures are the lowest rung on the international tennis circuit and offer players a chance to earn valuable ranking points and move up the ATP rankings. This is the first of 18 Future events scheduled to take place in India in 2012.
