Alex de Minaur vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry preview
Australia's Alex de Minaur will square off against Argentina's Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the group stage of the United Cup 2025.
De Minaur had the most successful season of his career in 2024. He advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open and made the last eight at the remaining three Majors. Out of the six Masters 1000 tournaments that he participated in this year, he reached the quarterfinals twice, and the fourth round thrice.
De Minaur won two titles this year, the first at the Mexican Open and another at the Libema Open. He also finished as the runner-up to Jannik Sinner in Rotterdam. His consistent results helped him crack the top 10 for the first time, and he peaked at No. 6 in July.
He qualified for the ATP Finals for the first time as well, though he failed to win a match and bowed out in the group stage. He finished the season ranked No. 9, and with a 47-21 record.
All of Etcheverry's best results this year were on clay. He advanced to the quarterfinal stage six times and won half of those matches to make the semifinals. His only final of the season came at the Lyon Open, where he lost to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Except for Wimbledon, where Etcheverry lost in the second round, he reached the third round of the other three Majors. He had a 31-29 record for the season and finished it ranked 39th.

Alex de Minaur vs Tomas Martin Etcheverry prediction
While Etcheverry tallied 31 wins in 2024, only 12 of them were on hardcourts, and he took 14 losses on the surface as well. He does have a win over de Minaur but that came before he transformed into a top player, and on the Australian's weakest surface, clay.
Additionally, Etcheverry has never performed well against elite opponents. He had a 0-8 record against top 10 players in 2024 and has gone 0-12 against them in his career. He has lost half of those matches in straight sets.
While de Minaur did have a strong 2024, his form took a nosedive towards the end. After his quarterfinal exit from the Paris Masters, he lost all three of his group ties at the ATP Finals, and then both of his singles matches at the Davis Cup Finals.
De Minaur is currently on a six-match losing streak. However, five of those six losses were against the top five players, and the other against No. 13 Holger Rune. Etcheverry is unlikely to offer him a stiff challenge, given his poor record against top players. As such, the Australian should safely make it through this clash.
Pick: Alex de Minaur to win in straight sets.
