Caroline Wozniacki and Renata Zarazua came through similarly dominant wins to set up a second-round showdown at the 2024 US Open.

Wozniacki, a former finalist in New York, was ruthless against Nao Hibino, dropping just one game en route to a 6-0, 6-1 win. She had come into the tournament having made an early exit in Cincinnati, losing to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the second round.

That said, New York was where the Dane made her first big run after returning to the sport last year and she will be keen on replicating that result.

Zarazua, for one, scored a big win over 28th seed Caroline Garcia in the opening round. She has come into the tournament with a modest-at-best 27-25 win-loss for the season. Most of the wins, however, came at lower-rung tournaments and her victory over the Frenchwoman here was her biggest of the year. She will be looking to build on that.

Both Wozniacki and Zarazua play a similar counterpunching style of tennis and make for an intriguing match-up. That said, when playing at her best, Wozniaki can put up a wall that is near-impossible to break past. The Dane can also turn up the heat on the groundstrokes, especially off the backhand wing, and attack the ball.

Zarazua likes pace coming at her, as evidenced in her opening match against Garcia. She is great at absorbing pressure and redirecting balls. Wozniacki though is unlikely to give her much to feed off of. The Dane remains the more powerful player off the ground and her serving numbers, 81% on the first serve, are also much better than her opponent’s 54%. Those factors, added to her wealth of experience, should help her sail through.
