Home favorite Christopher Eubanks will open his US Open campaign against Arthur Rinderknech in a tantalizing first-round encounter on Monday, August 26.

Eubanks has had a disappointing 2024, arriving in New York with an 11-18 match record. He struggled early in the year, failing to string two consecutive ATP main draw wins in until June. He broke the streak in Halle, where he defeated Pedro Martinez and Alexander Bublik before losing to Zhizhen Zhang in three tight sets in the quarterfinals.

At Wimbledon, expectations were high following his quarterfinal run last year, but he was unexpectedly eliminated in the first round by Quentin Halys. His best result of the year came at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, where he reached the semifinals before losing to Marcos Giron in another close three-set match.

Eubanks later reached the quarterfinals of the Winston-Salem Open, where he was defeated by Alex Michelsen in a three-set thriller.

Rinderknech heads into New York with a 16-16 win-loss record for the season. He reached the quarterfinals in Marseille and Lyon during the first half of the year but had little success elsewhere, failing to advance past the second round in every other tournament.

He showed some form in Atlanta, where he narrowly lost a semifinal match to Yoshihito Nishioka. At the National Bank Open, he progressed through the qualifiers but was defeated by fourth seed Hubert Hurkacz in the second round, despite winning the first set. Most recently, Rinderknech reached the second round in Winston-Salem, where he lost in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to a resurgent David Goffin.

Although Eubanks has had a subpar season so far, his recent strong form puts him in a good position as he heads into his home Grand Slam, the final one of the year. He has been regaining his powerful serve and forehand, which could make him a formidable opponent if he performs well at Flushing Meadows over the next fortnight.

On the other hand, Rinderknech has also struggled with consistency this season. While he has been serving well, his high count of unforced errors from the baseline has been a significant weakness.

Both players have had similar seasons, often finding it challenging to string together consecutive wins. However, Eubanks' superior hardcourt record and familiarity with the conditions should give him an edge in this match, despite their comparable recent form.

The match is likely to be a close contest between two strong servers, with the home support possibly resulting in the American edging it in the end.

Pick: Eubanks in four sets.
