Elena Rybakina vs Jessika Ponchet preview
Fourth seed Elena Rybakina will face France's Jessika Ponchet in the second round of the 2024 US Open.
Rybakina has been in great form this year, accumulating a 41-9 win/loss record and winning three WTA titles. The Kazakh has been compromised by issues surrounding her health, though. She withdrew from the Dubai Tennis Championships, the BNP Paribas Open, the Italian Open, the Berlin Ladies Open, the Eastbourne International, and the Paris Olympics due to illness.
Having said that, the 2022 Wimbledon champion was in good shape during her opener at Flushing Meadows. She dropped serve only once and saved three set points in the second set to down Aussie qualifier Destanee Aiava 6-1, 7-6(1).
Ponchet, meanwhile, is competing in only her sixth Grand Slam tournament main draw this fortnight. The Frenchwoman mostly plies her trade on the ITF circuit. She qualified for this year's US Open in convincing fashion, winning all of her qualifying matches in straight sets.

Elena Rybakina vs Jessika Ponchet prediction
Rybakina's game was firing from all cylinders during her first-round match in New York. The 25-year-old won nearly 80% of her first-serve points and dominated her opponent from the baseline. At 6'0", the World No. 4 not only possesses one of the best service games on the WTA Tour but is also consistent from the baseline.
Ponchet has one of the most unique playing styles in the women's game, which offsets her opponents' rhythm. The World No. 143 plays with a single-handed backhand and has a wristy forehand, allowing her to balance precision and power well.
The French qualifier has an underwhelming serve, though, which will likely be picked apart by Rybakina. The fourth seed should come through this match-up unscathed as long as she is physically fit.
Pick: Rybakina in straight sets.
