Poland's Swiatek will lock horns with Japan's Shibahara in the second round of the 2024 US Open women's singles event on Thursday, August 29.

Swiatek registered a straight-set win over Russia's Kamilla Rakhimova in the first round on Tuesday. However, it wasn't an easy outing for the Pole as Rakhimova proved to be a tough opponent.

The Russian broke her twice and forced a tiebreaker in the second set, testing Swiatek's resilience. The first seed eventually managed to edge Rakhimova out 6-4, 7-6(6) with three break-point conversions and five aces.

Ena Shibahara, who entered the main draw as a qualifier, also had to battle hard in her first-round match against Australia's Daria Saville. In a match that extended beyond three hours, she broke Saville five times but had her serve broken as many times.

The first set went Shibahara's way but Saville leveled the score by taking the second. The two remained inseparable in the stipulated 12 games of the third set. The set eventually went to a tiebreaker, where the Japanese star prevailed to register a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(10-6) win.
