Diego Schwartzman is set to square off against compatriot and top seed Thiago Agustin Tirante in the second round of the 2024 US Open qualifying on Wednesday, August 21.

Schwartzman has scarcely featured on tour this season and holds an abysmal 0-7 match record on it. He played his first main draw match of the season in Cordoba, going down to compatriot Roman Andres Burruchaga in his opener. He was awarded a wildcard at the Argentina Open and Los Cabos Open but failed to register a win there either.

Schwartzman has succumbed in the qualifiers of all three slams so far. He opened his US Open campaign with a comfortable 7-5, 6-3 win against Andrea Pellegrino in the first round.

Agustin Tirante, meanwhile, holds a 6-5 match record this season. He won the opening rounds in Cordoba and Chile but went down to Facundo Diaz Acosta and Corentin Moutet in the second round. He succumbed in a five-set epic to Pedro Martinez at the French Open. Tirante racked up his best result of the season at the Nordea Open with a semifinal run. He beat the likes of Andrey Rublev and Roberto Carballes Baena before going down to eventual champion Nuno Borges.

Tirante opened his US Open campaign against Dmitry Popko in the first round. He fought back valiantly from a set down to seal an emphatic 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win.

Diego Schwartzman opened his US Open campaign emphatically with a comfortable straight-sets victory. He served well, hitting nine aces and winning 65% of points behind his first serve. He was particularly good on the return, breaking serve five times out of eight and amassing 52% receiving points won.

Tirante, on the other hand, was tested in his opener but displayed incredible composure to come through in a comfortable third set. He was outstanding on serve, hitting 5 aces and winning 76% of points behind his first serve. He broke serve five times out of nine and had a 100% conversion rate at the net. His unforced error count was possibly his only worry.

Tirante enters the contest as the outright favorite to go through. He's been in the better form of late and has played more tennis this season. Schwartzman has played just seven main draw games so far and continues to search for his first win. He will be eager to score a win in what is his last full season on tour.
