Diego Schwartzman vs Vilius Gaubas preview
Former top-10 player Diego Schwartzman will face Vilius Gaubas in the final qualifying round of the US Open 2024.
Schwartzman secured a 7-5, 6-3 win over Andrea Pellegrino to make the second round of qualifiers, where he faced top seed Thiago Agustin Tirante. Both players defended their serves quite well for most of the first set.
Schwartzman faced five break points in the 11th game but fended them off for a hold of serve. Tirante rued those missed chances as he got broken in the next game to lose the set.
Schwartzman struck first in the second set to go up a break, only for Tirante to break back immediately to level terms. The latter then served to stay in the match at 5-4, and the former secured one final break of serve for a 7-5, 6-4 win.
Gaubas defeated Daniel Rincon 6-3, 6-2 to advance into the second qualifying stage, where he was up against Richard Gasquet. The teenager raced to a 4-0 lead in the first set, which he held onto until the end to claim the set.
Gasquet played slightly better in the next set but was no match for his younger foe. Gaubas snagged a break in the fifth game to go 3-2 up and kept his opponent at bay after that to register a 6-2, 6-4 win.

Diego Schwartzman vs Vilius Gaubas prediction
This is the closest Schwartzman has gotten to making the main draw of a Major this year. He previously lost in the first round of qualifying at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and the second stage of qualifying at the French Open.
Gaubas is contesting the qualifiers of a Major for the first time in his career and is one win away from making his main draw debut. He has breezed through the qualifying rounds thus far and hasn't dropped his serve even once.
Having knocked out one former top-10 player in the form of Gasquet, Gaubas will be eyeing to repeat the feat once again. Schwartzman is set to retire at next year's Argentina Open in February, so qualifying for a Major one last time would be quite a big deal for him.
Gaubas has tasted most of his success on clay at the Challenger level. The Argentine is partial to the red dirt himself but is also a capable hardcourt player. He's a two-time US Open quarterfinalist as well. Given his experience, Schwartzman should be able to outplay his younger rival to make the main draw.
Pick: Diego Schwartzman to win in three sets.
