Mitchell Krueger vs Maximilian Marterer preview
Local boy Mitchell Krueger will face fifth seed Maximilian Marterer in the third round of qualifying for a spot in the main draw of the US Open on Thursday, August 22. Victory for the former will see him reach the main draw of the New York Major for the first time since 2020.
Krueger arrived in New York with just three main draw matches under his belt this season. He competed at the Dallas Open but lost to Max Purcell in the first round. His only win of the season came at the Citi Open against Luca Nardi. He has, however, enjoyed considerable success on the Challenger circuit, winning titles in Indian Wells and Little Rock.
Krueger began his US Open qualifying campaign with a surprising 6-3, 6-3 victory over 28th seed Vit Kopriva. He then came from behind to defeat Abedallah Shelbayh 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the second round.
Marterer has struggled on the ATP tour this season, holding a 3-13 win-loss record. His first main draw win of the season came at the French Open, where he defeated Jordan Thompson 6-3, 6-2, 6-0. His other victories were against Dusan Lajovic at the Olympics and Kwon Soon-woo at the German Open.
As the fifth seed in the qualifiers, Marterer began his New York campaign with a straightforward 6-3, 6-4 win over Jack Kennedy. He continued his solid performance in the second round with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) victory against Patrick Kypson.

Mitchell Krueger vs Maximilian Marterer prediction
Mitchell Krueger looked solid in his opener, excelling both on serve and from the baseline. He faced a tough challenge in his second-round match but played a brilliant deciding set to secure the win.
In contrast, Maximilian Marterer has been in exceptional form this week, having yet to drop a set. He has been outstanding on serve, accumulating 27 aces and winning an average of 81% of points behind his first serve in his opening two matches. His powerful forehand could prove to be a key asset as the tournament progresses.
Marterer enters this match as the favorite due to his experience and recent run of good form. The faster courts at Flushing Meadows are likely to benefit him more and given him a clear edge given his big serves.
Pick: Marterer in straight sets.
